BLOG ON: SERMON Joel Osteen: PG Coverboy!
Londonderry Free Presbyterian Church
Rev Ian Brown
Some other observations on Osteen's emphasis in preaching:

β€’ "As the rap group Public Enemy once put it, "'Don't Worry, Be Happy' is the number one jam." It appears that it's the number Gospel message as well.

Christ focused on inward growth that reflected the Father/Mother in all of us. His message didn't include being "happy". Now, we have a number of televangelists who want us to "maximize the moment", "live our potential", and all that lovely stuff.

What gets me is that 20 or so years ago, preaching like Joel's would be deemed heresy by mainstream Christianity. Now, it's Christian "haute coture". Hmm...maybe I need to crank out a "get happy gospel".

Maybe those fat royalty checks and interviews will make me happy..."

β€’ "It is amazing how dumbed-down today's Christian writers are.

The idea that trust in God, even through the dark night, brings peace was so much more eloquently argued by St. John of the Cross, in his Spiritual Canticle.

This fellow, though disclaiming the 'prosperity gospel' can't help but sound like he is preaching it - because our theological language has been reduced to that.

Unfortunate really. Christianity's voice is faltering, and it is hard to know what to do about it... ."
