CALL TO WORSHIP

(Tune – Immortal, Invisible – p. 34)

We gather this morning to worship and praise,

The God of all glory, the Ancient of Days.

None other is worthy but Jesus alone

God’s Lamb once provided, His blood has atoned.

From sin and from darkness, He brings out His own

Through preaching the Gospel to them He makes known,

The riches of glory and grace by His cross:

Eternal possessions which cannot be lost.

Praise be to the Father who chose us in grace.

Praise be to the Son who has died in our place.

Praise be to the Spirit who gave us new birth.

Praise be to the One God of heaven and earth.

With all of our hearts does the Lord bid us sing

Come humbly before Him, thanksgiving to bring.

All others are idols, He lives, God alone

By grace He has saved us and made us His own.

"CHRIST DIED FOR THE UNGODLY!" (ROMANS 5:6)

To redeem poor sinners, Jesus came down from heaven, put on the rags of our mortality, agonized, bled, and died. Jesus is made His people's substitute, burden-bearer, sin-remover, guilt-sustainer. Their debt is placed to His account. His riches pay the full amount. Sin is removed from the sinner and placed on the sinless! Their curse is rolled on Him, and He endures it until no more remains! God deals with Jesus as the guilty one! He, as spotless Deity, receives imputed sins, and fully expiates them all. In the vicarious victim, God's justice is satisfied, and wrath expires! Jesus, in His life, in the garden, on the cross suffers their sufferings, dies their death, and so becomes their uttermost salvation! His pains are their pardon! His stripes are their healing! His agony is their recovery! "Christ died for the ungodly!" (Romans 5:6) —Henry Law

TRUE WORSHIP

God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24)

True worship is founded upon the glorious Person and finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ. God can accept no one’s person, worship, or service except in Christ and upon the basis of His obedience unto death to satisfy justice and establish righteousness. In Christ God is glorified because in Christ God is both just and Justifier of the ungodly. When we come before God in true worship we come by faith as sinners saved by grace, washed clean from our sins in the blood of Christ, and clothed in the righteousness of Christ imputed to us from Whom we have spiritual life within.

True worship is aimed towards the glory of God in Christ as we seek to praise, honor, and thank HIM for His free and marvelous grace, love, and mercy toward us in and by the Lord Jesus Christ. When we truly worship God, we glory in Christ, not in ourselves; we praise and honor Christ, not ourselves; we preach Christ, not ourselves.

True worship is inspired by God the Holy Spirit within us, and it comes from the new heart and new spirit He has given us in the new birth. Because of this, we long to express our praise and gratitude to God for all that He has done for us and given to us in free sovereign grace by Jesus Christ. It is only the regenerated soul that loves and desires to honor Christ and hungers for the Word of God in true worship. —Pastor Bill Parker

WHAT IS BIBLICAL REPENTANCE?

Augustus Toplady, the writer of one of my favorite hymns, “Rock of Ages,” wrote the following statement concerning repentance –

“When Christ entered into Jerusalem, the people spread their garments in the way. When He enters into our hearts, we pull off our own righteousness and not only lay it under Christ’s feet, but trample upon it ourselves.”

Toplady was expressing the reality of true Biblical repentance which occurs in the heart of every sinner justified by Christ’s finished work at Calvary. In regeneration, the justified sinner for the first time sees how holy God is, and how strict His justice is, and they are taught that ONLY the merit of the obedience and death of their Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, removed God’s wrath and gained God’s favor for them. This radical change of mind affected in every sinner God the Father justified by the cross is something only common to the elect of God, and like faith, it is a gift – “When they (the Apostles) heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.”(Acts 11:18) True repentance is evidenced by a sinner willingly turning his back on everything he before thought saved him or recommended him to God, and resting SOLELY on Christ ALONE as his only ground, hope, and cause of eternal life. The Apostle Paul wrote, “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” (Php.3:3) —Pastor Richard Warmack

God's people cannot believe and rely upon that which they cannot clearly read in His word. Let men, if they want, speak of unexplainable things or mysteries so great that they cannot be clearly set forth, but give me what “Thus saith the Lord.” God has clearly and plainly written in His word the things He would have them to know and trust in. The mysteries of eternity, of the everlasting covenant, even the mystery of godliness has been made known: “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” (1 Tim. 3:16) —Pastor Gary Shepard
