1. True seekers\Worshippers have a God-given spiritual perception.
Verse 19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
“The order is a prophet art thou; the emphasis being on prophet.” {Vincent}
We should not underestimate the importance of this point!
The world knows nothing of spiritual things.
Consider:
1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
2. True Seekers\Worshippers are concerned about the method of how we Worship.
Verse 20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
Note,
She is not like so many who came to Christ for earthly fulfillments.
Consider those whom Christ rebukes in John chapter six.
Joh 6:26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Joh 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
3. True Worship is not to be isolated to Geographical areas!
Verse 21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
This shows the fallacy of Romanism and Islam among others who claim their “Holy Places”
4. Salvation and true Knowledge must precede Worship.
Only the Saved can truly worship God!
Verse 22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
Note,
The importance that Christ puts on knowledge.
Not vain knowledge but knowledge of the truth.
5. True Worshippers worship the only one true God. Which is not Allah or Budha or even the God of modern Jews but the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Verse 23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
Note,
The change that Christ brought “But the hour cometh, and now is”
So,
They worship,
A. The right person “The Father”
B. In the right context “In Spirit”
C. In the right way “In Truth”
D. In the right relationship “the Father seeketh such”
6. True worshippers know that there is only one way to worship God.
Verse 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
7. True worshippers look to Christ alone as the source of all truth.
Verse 25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
8. True Worshippers will have personal communion with Jesus.
Verse 26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
9. True worshippers will be noticed by Saint and sinner alike
Verse 27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
10. True worshippers will put less value on the things of this world than those who are of the world.
Verse 28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
11. True worshippers will be courageous in their witness for Christ.
“and went her way into the city, and saith to the men”
12. True worshippers will seek to draw others to Christ.
Verse 29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
13. True Worshippers will challenge others to believe in Christ.
“is not this the Christ?”
14. True Worshippers will be used of God to bring others to Christ.
Verse 30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
15. True worshippers, because they simply and faithfully reflect Christ in their words and actions, will be a cause of seeing others come to faith in the Saviour.
Verse 39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
16. True worshippers will cause the presence of Christ to be present in a special way in their place of dwelling.
Verse 40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
17. True worship will cause the word of Christ to spread to ever increasing numbers of people.
Verse 41 And many more believed because of his own word;
18. True worship will protect us from the error of people trusting in our words alone and rather will cause them to put all their trust in Christ and in him Only.
Verse 42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
