Saved or Lost? - Dr. James A. Scudder

Today's Scripture: For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:17–18

On April 10, 1912, over 1,300 passengers joined 885 crew members on the RMS Titanicfor the ship’s first voyage. The people paid from about $545 for a Third Class cabin to as much as $83,000 for First Class (in today’s dollars). They got what they paid for, too. Third Class passengers had to board the ship first to find their living spaces near the bottom and get a health inspection to make sure they would be allowed to enter the United States. First Class passengers were personally greeted by the ship’s captain as they boarded, with no health inspection required.

Four days later on April 14, 1912, the RMS Titanic hit an iceberg near the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. In two hours and forty minutes, the ship sank in the Atlantic Ocean. Suddenly, people forgot about their “class.” The only thing on their minds was survival. After the tragedy, the people on the ship could be identified in only two classes: saved and lost. According to the British Board of Trade, 710 people were saved and 1,514 were lost.

In eternity, there will only be two classes of people: those who are saved and those who are lost. It will not matter how much money we had. It will not matter how important we were on Earth or how many friends we had. It will not matter what color our skin was. It will not matter what country we came from. God will only judge us based on the decision we made about His Son.

Man has created the different social classes we have in our world today. God does not recognize these differences. He puts everyone in the class of saved or lost. Which category do you fit in? If you have put your trust in Jesus Christ as your only way to Heaven, then you are in the “saved” class. If you are not sure where you will spend eternity, then you are in the “lost” class. Get in the right class: eternity hangs in the balance.

Devotional by Dr. James A. Scudder
