The Critical Component - Jim Scudder, Jr.

Today's Scripture: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

On the west side of the Grand Canyon, there is a skywalk where you can venture 70 feet out over the canyon. The skywalk is made of glass, so you can look straight down and see nothing but 2,000 feet of air between you and the ground. Stepping out onto this glass would take some faith, but at least you can see and feel the glass. Many times, in the Christian life, we must step out into the unknown with only our faith to hold onto.

Faith is the substance or foundation that everything needs to be built on in life. It is all about faith. It is the basis of our life, but we can’t see it. That’s what makes it so hard: we want to be able to see things, but we don’t always have that option.

In Hebrews 11:1, we see this idea that we believe in what God has said, even if we haven’t seen it or experienced it. We believe Him, we trust Him, and we’re going to live by what He said. We know He’s real, we know He has saved us, we know He has told us how to live, and we’re going to do that.

Faith is the critical component of the Christian life. It is how we enter the Christian life. First, we believe that there is a God; then we believe that His Son, Jesus Christ, died on a cross to pay for our sins. After that, it is an everyday task of learning more about Him and learning to walk with Him.

By faith we believe that all the things that the Bible teaches us work. God’s Word works, and we need to live by it.
