I once heard a man say, “One area where I do not struggle is the area of pride.” Unfortunately, this man really had a problem, but didn’t have the humility to see it.

Why does God hate pride? Is it because He has an ego problem? Is it because He doesn’t want us to be confident in ourselves? Someone who is prideful is really saying that they don’t need God. They think they can live life on their own.

God only wants what is good for us, but He can’t shower us with His blessings if we stubbornly cling to our own ways. God knows us better than we do. As the Creator, He knows our genetic makeup, our emotional framework, even our physical limitations. So, when we exalt ourselves, it only leads to our own destruction and ruin.

Therefore, God’s hatred of a haughty spirit is born out of His love. A love that accepts us the way we are but is too strong to keep us that way. That’s why He warns us about the ever-present danger of self-love and brings circumstances to humble our hearts.

Pride is something we will always grapple with—if we’re smart. By recognizing the danger and asking the Holy Spirit for strength, we can win the battle and go on to victory.
