Where Hope is Still Alive - Jim Scudder, Jr.

Today's Scripture: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:5-6

Sometimes music helps bring to mind things that often get lost in the business of day-to-day life. The Quentin Road Baptist Church choir recently sang a song entitled, Where Hope is Still Alive, that touched my heart and got me thinking. The lyrics had a poignant message: “The guilty weight of all I’ve done, hangs like a stone upon my shoulder. I’ve lost more battles than I’ve won and bit by bit my heart’s grown colder. But still there’s mercy left for me; for in the Cross of Jesus Christ I see, a place where hope is still alive; where love remains for me unshaken. The cross where Jesus bled and died, where grace was freely given, the place where hope is still alive.

The world would think the cross to be a place of sorrow and defeat, but that could not be anything further from the truth. Because of all that was accomplished there, it is the most hopeful place we as believers can think of. Living in this sin-filled world is anything but easy, and sometimes the challenges we face really get us down. All too often, we forget to lay our burdens at the cross so that our strength can be renewed. As we are making our journey through this life, does the world see hope in us? Can they feel the peace of God’s mercy and grace flowing through our lives?

Whether you are going through a painful, unwanted divorce, or feeling shackled by your past, plagued by decisions you wish you could change, there is endless mercy and grace for you at Calvary. If you were the only person on earth, Christ would have come just for you—that is how much you are loved. Find hope today in the fact that you are worth everything to Him, and He proved it by giving everything for you. Then, let others see that hope shine in your life.

Devotional by Jim Scudder, Jr.
