In keeping with our practical theme of the "songs of degrees" we see yet another step in the psalmist's journey from spiritual defeat in Psalm 120 to the victorious life in Psalm 134. The psalmist now turns to his family, specifically his children, and to spiritual parenting. Implied is the victorious life cannot be had independent of godly parenting! Surely it goes without saying, but if we lose our children to the devil how victorious has our Christian life been? Notice the truths given us:
1. In verses 1 and 2 he declares the godly parent is unable to be successful apart from partnering with God. The efforts of the most spiritual parents are vanity unless God blesses. God must produce results or our parenting efforts are in vain.
John 15:5 ... for without me ye can do nothing.
2. Also in verses 1 and 2 we see the parents responsibility to spiritually build the house where the children live, and to watch and guard in the city where the children are when not in the home. Let me emphasize the importance of taking responsibility for your children not only when they are with you, but when they are out and away from you!! Know where and with whom your children are at all times. Take nothing for granted when it comes to their spiritual welfare.
3. In verse 2 we are taught when we have done our part as godly parents to commit the rest unto the Lord. In other words, be the godly parenst to your children that you should be, and then trust the Lord to do His part. As parents we must rest in Him, or we would never be able to sleep.
4. In verse 3 thru 5 we learn the proper prospective we should view our children from. They are not to be thought of as a necessary evil, or a burden weighting your life down, nor a financial drain on your finances, but:
- A heritage from the Lord
- His reward
- As arrows
- Source of happiness
- Fellowsoldiers in the battle
To sum up our overview of Psalm 127 part of the victorious Christian life is spiritual parenting, and to ignore it is to live a defeated spiritual life.
Until next time God bless you.
