Frank Morison was determined to prove that Jesus was a fake. In his book, Who Moved the Stone, he wanted to use facts to expose Jesus’ resurrection as a fraud, once and for all. However, he titled his first chapter “The Book that Refused to be Written.” As he examined the evidence, he became persuaded against his will that Jesus really did rise again. Let’s take a look at four main theories people try to use to oppose the validity of the resurrection.

The first theory states that the soldiers fell asleep, and the disciples stole the body. Roman soldiers were the best of the best. Failure equaled death. When they reported Jesus missing, they got paid off to say what they were told. (Matthew 28:11-15)

The second theory is that the authorities moved the body. But, why would they have placed guards at the tomb? They would have paraded Jesus’ dead body through Jerusalem to silence the Christians. Faith in Jesus was the last thing they wanted perpetuated. (Matthew 27:62-66)

Third is the wrong tomb theory, which claims that it was still dark and the women were so sorrowful that they went to the wrong tomb. If they went to the wrong tomb, why wouldn’t the authorities have gone to the right tomb and said, “Look, he is still here!”? (Matthew 28:1, 5-9)

The fourth is the swoon theory. This more recent theory states that Jesus didn’t really die, but that He fainted or was in a coma. During the time of Christ, it was obvious to everyone that he died. When they pierced His side, water and blood came forth. He was wrapped and laid in an airless tomb for three days with no food or water. (John 19:33-40)

In conclusion, we are left with one logical explanation—the power of God moved the stone when Jesus rose from the dead. Not only can we as believers have the peace of mind that we will rise with our risen Savior, but we can also have the confidence to remain unshaken in our stand on the resurrection.
