A true story is told of a Notre Dame football player who went to a civil court to testify for a friend. The judge asked him, “What’s your position on the team?” He replied that he was a center. And so the judge asked him, “Are you good?”

The young man replied, “Sir, I’m the best center Notre Dame has ever had.” He didn’t just stop there, but continued, “As a matter of fact, I’m the best center this country has ever had.”

The player’s coach witnessed the entire discourse with amazement, thinking, “Wow! I didn’t know that!” He said to the judge, “The guy is good, but he’s not that good.” Then he went up to the football player and demanded, “Why did you say that?”

He said, “Coach, I didn’t want to say it, but I was under oath!”

I think this player had a little too much confidence! But how many times are we the same way? We confidently thrust ourselves into compromising situations—a drink or smoke here, a mouse click or two there, or a flip of the remote control— falsely assuming, “I can handle it. I’m in control.”

When we put confidence in the flesh, we will fall. Our confidence ought to be in none other than Christ, Who knows us far better than we know ourselves. We tend to emphasize our abilities, our achievements, our status, our will-power, etc.—but our focus must be in Christ.
