Nehemiah was a person of captivity. He was taken from Israel in the same captivity as Daniel and his friends. Nehemiah was a faithful and godly person who had risen in the ranks of the palace to become the king’s cupbearer. When you are faithful, you probably won’t get invitations to the popular hangouts, but people will reach out to you when they need help. Nehemiah had a testimony of being a faithful person.

One day an awful report came in from the remnant that had been left in Jerusalem. The report was that the remnant was in great affliction, and the gates and walls of the city were burned with fire. After all these years, the beautiful city of Jerusalem laid in waste. The wall was broken down. Without the wall, invaders could just come in and take what they wanted. Nehemiah knew that this was not how God’s people should be living.

This bothered Nehemiah, but he didn’t have to be bothered by it. After all, he was living a pretty good life; why would he care about people who were living hundreds of miles away? Yet he cared so much that it affected his person. He fasted and prayed.

Do you care? Are you too comfortable? Are you just going through life, choosing to block out what you know is true? There are millions who have never heard the name of Jesus heading into a Christ-less eternity every day.

We know what Jesus did for us. We understand what He did for us. This understanding should motivate us to care and to share.
