“NEVERTHELESS HE SAVED THEM”
Psalm 106:8

David must have been reading the book of Moses and the many marvelous deliverances of God’s covenant people and under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost when he penned this Psalm, he breaks forth in the Hebrew tongue with a “Hallelujah,” then continues, “Oh give thanks unto the Lord for He is good! For His Mercy endureth forever.”
To a needy sinner the “goodness” of God is the first attribute that excites praise from his awakened soul. It is out of God’s goodness that grace and mercy flow to the “poor and needy.” Knowledge of His goodness assures the heart of His mercy, therefore David said, “His mercy endures forever.” In light of our continuing sinfulness it is a wonderful encouragement to know that “His mercy endures forever.”
There is so much in Psalm 106 that it is difficult to pass from one verse to another without meditation and discussion. It would be good if you would take your Bibles and read this Psalm for yourself then use it with this article. For lack of space let me come to the heading of the article, “Nevertheless He saved them.” David broke forth with a personal plea in verse four, “Remember me with the grace you have toward your people.” In verse six he offers a corporate confession, “We have sinned with our Fathers, … He confesses the ignorance and stupidity of his ancestors, their dumbness and unmindfullness toward God’s mercies, their unbelief that provoked Him at the Red Sea, then he says, “Nevertheless He saved them.”
It can never be said of the great Jehovah that He cannot nor will not save His people. A Mary Magdalene may be possessed of seven devils; “nevertheless” she shall be saved! A maniac at Gadara may rage with madness, possessed with a legion of demons, “nevertheless” Christ saved him. Manasseh may fall to the very depths in his depraved apostasy, deep, deep into idolatry, burn his children in the fire and teach Israel to do also, “nevertheless” God brought him to repentance and saved him.
Maybe you are one that feels your sins are so bad that God would never consider you. Maybe your sin is the worse kind—murder, theft, adultery, drugs; “Nevertheless He can save you!” Or maybe you are one who feels he has no sin, you are in church, you read your Bible, you are a help to those who need help—but if you do not have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ then you are not “poor and needy.”

“What comfort can a Savior bring
To those who never felt their woe
A sinner is a sacred thing;
The Holy Ghost has made him so.
New life from Him we must receive,
Before for sin we righty grieve.”
