Hummingbird or Vulture? - Dr. James A. Scudder

Today's Scripture: If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. Colossians 3:1-3

Both the hummingbird and the vulture fly over our nation’s deserts. All vultures see is rotting meat, because that is what they look for. They thrive on that diet. But hummingbirds look for the colorful blossoms of desert plants. The vultures live on what was. They live on the past. They fill themselves with what is dead and gone. But hummingbirds live on what is. They seek new life. They fill themselves with freshness and life. Each bird finds what it is looking for.

What are you living for? Is the past, however glorious or painful, what you’ve set your sights upon? Or are you seeking after new, abundant life? Only if you know what you’re looking for will you find it.

Some people, like vultures, survive on a steady diet of carrion—dead relationships, dead dreams, dead ambitions, etc. They’re tuned in to the past. They have a self-centered, “What’s in It for Me?” attitude. Others, like the hummingbird, feed on the wholesome and uplifting elements of life. They seek new, abundant life in Christ, and their focus is on growing closer to Him. They have found lasting satisfaction, joy and peace.

Life isn’t trouble-free for hummingbirds, but they get around a lot better without all the extra baggage! Be a hummingbird—but be prepared to change your diet!

Devotional by Dr. James A. Scudder
