How Should We Love? - Jim Scudder Jr.

Today's Scripture: This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:12-13

Around the world today, people in many countries are celebrating Valentine’s Day. Millions of dollars are being spent on flowers, chocolate, and other gifts as expressions of love and affection. Unfortunately, the definition of love has become very distorted.

To find out what true love means, we must turn to the one Book that does not change - God’s Word. Jesus described the greatest love that a person could have as a love that would willingly and sacrificially give. Jesus demonstrated that love for us by giving His life on the cross.

This kind of agape love - sacrificial and unconditional - cannot be purchased with flowers or candy. This kind of love can only come from the One Who loved us first. When we realize the debt of love that we owe, we should begin to see the need to love others as He loved us.

Jesus reminded the disciples in John 13:35 that people would know they were His disciples by the love that they had for one another. When the world looks at how you treat others, do they know that you are a follower of Jesus Christ?

While there is nothing wrong with buying flowers or chocolate for your spouse today, let's remember to keep things in perspective. Take a few moments today to think about how you can demonstrate a sacrificial and unconditional love for your husband or wife, and then let that love begin to spill over to those around you.
