For many years our church owned a camp on Leech Lake in northern Minnesota. The camp was located in the Chippewa National Forest, and devoid of man-made light pollution. At night, you could sit on the dock and look up at more stars than you ever knew existed.

Comparing yourself to one of the billions and trillions of stars is a very humbling exercise. When you consider that one million copies of our planet Earth could fit inside the sun, and that the sun is one of the smallest stars that we know of, it makes you feel quite small. Our increasing knowledge of the universe should increase our sense of how small we are.

The infinite power and majesty of God shows the foolishness of replying, or arguing, against God. The God that spoke the billions and trillions of stars and planets into existence is more powerful than we could ever begin to comprehend. Yet, sinful man will dare to engage in the foolishness of talking back to Him.

Every sin has a bit of pride in it. We think we deserve things that God has not chosen to give us. We’re not hot stuff when we consider how small we are. The best of us are loathsome sinners. Our lives have been shot through with sin.

When you’re tempted to question or ague with God, think of the stars and of how small you really are. Ask Him to help you keep things in perspective, and be thankful for what He has done in your life.
