Don't Talk Back - Jim Scudder Jr.

Today's Scripture: Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Romans 9:20

Most people wouldn’t consider jumping out of an airplane just for fun, even with a working parachute. However, a skydiver named Luke Aikins went one step further. On July 31, 2016, he stepped out of an airplane 25,000 feet above the earth’s surface, and began his two-minute journey back to earth – without a parachute. Remarkably, he was successful, and landed safely in a net.

In today’s Scripture, we see the most insane, daring, exceedingly foolish, dangerous, and desperately wicked thing a human being can do. It is not base jumping off of a cliff. It is not swimming with sharks. It is not even skydiving without a parachute.

It is the foolishness of sinful man criticizing the holy God.

In our Scripture passage today, the word “repliest” carries with it the idea of a child talking back to their parent. We’ve all seen that happen before, and we know how foolish it is. Yet, I think that we can be guilty of doing just that to God more often than we think.

It is easy to question God any time that you are unhappy with Him. Sometimes it seems that He blesses someone who doesn’t seem to be living a godly life. Just remember that someone’s health and prosperity are no indication of their obedience to God, just as their poverty or illness is not an indicator of sin.

When life seems unfair or uncertain, remember to keep things in perspective. He is God, and we are mere man. Trust His purpose and plan.

Devotional by Jim Scudder Jr.
