A Thought From the Word

“And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. ” Revelation 2:8-10

When you are suffering, it's great to hear comforting words. But it is especially strengthening if those words come from someone who knows what they're talking about and truly loves you. The One who was dead but rose again has spoken to suffering saints!

He reminds the church at Smyrna that even though they are in tribulation and suffering poverty, they are really rich. These are wise words of perspective. To the naked eye, these suffering disciples don't seem rich. Their lives don't seem enviable. But, in the perspective of Almighty God, everything changes. Because Christ redeemed them from sin, and because His resurrection displays His victory over all evil, they are in great shape.

In summary, His counsel is: you are suffering and poor, but remember that you are eternally rich. You will suffer more, but don't be afraid. Your suffering will be temporary. Your eternal bliss will be forever.
