A Thought From the Word
“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.” Revelation 2:4,5
A sad reality of the Christian life is that Christ can lose some of His majesty and preciousness in our hearts. Due to our remaining indwelling sin, living in a sinful world and the distractions that are so prominent, our love for Christ and His service can diminish in its exercise. It is important that we periodically examine ourselves to discern the health of our love for Christ.
Do you have a hunger for God's word? Have you found it easier and easier to rationalize sin and make excuses instead of repenting? Do other things frequently get in the way of going to worship in church, or times of prayer or service to others? Do you give great amounts of time to activities or hobbies, but spend little time with God? Do you have joy in the Lord? Do you often give thanks to God for His grace?
These are some good diagnostic questions to gauge the condition of our hearts. Most importantly, we should ask God to renew us and revive every deficient area of our hearts in love to Him.
There is hope if you've slipped. But, you must take it seriously, and seek God's grace to remedy it. Here is a great motivation: God is worthy of our deepest love. He is a Faithful Creator. He is a merciful Savior. He is a wise Father. He is the only One who can satisfy the human soul. He is the greatest treasure. He has been good to us. May our hearts sing the hymn, “More love to thee, O Christ!”
