"Faithful Hearers" James 1 & Psalm 19 We sometimes have the same problem that our children have and do NOT listen well. Our children do that sometimes purposely, but also inattentively. So do we sometimes as children of God......Sometimes inattentively and negligent and sometimes purposely according to our flesh. James in interested in the practice of our Christianity (and not just nominally.)
"Be ye doers of the word of God." He switches to the WORD of God to teh WORK to point out that we MUST be doers of it. The word of God that begets us, guides us, the word of God that is preached. James does not bring distinction to the word of God (as we can talk about it) but focus' on the word of God as a whole and flows into the word as it manifests itself in the work. It is the law of liberty! The word of God that speaks to us, changes and quickens you and I, continues to live within us so that continue to live in it, being freed from the bondage of sin and freed into its very liberty! The world looks at us often and sees us in bondage, not understanding that our freedom is found living as Christ made us free from that bondage. We have been freed and are given the word of God and instruction on how to live in that freedom as we still live in our flesh.
"As a doer of the work...." Read what James says about a hearer of a doer. The hearer reflects himself and walks away....but we see ourselves and look beyond at the cross and the liberty we have been taken to, and do NOT forget what we saw in the mirror. That is why we look into the law of God and SEARCH it! The same word that the angels (servants of God) desired, peered into, searched eagerly! So do we. We continue to search and peer into that same word of God that we may live good and holy lives, knowing that it leads us. Not as forgetful hearers only, but as those who love that word of God and are eager for it!
We search that word of God. Yes, we are eager to hear it. Do NOT forget it as it SAFELY leads, guides, and directs ALWAYS! The result? "That man is blest in his deed." Not from the worlds perspective, but from God's perspective. The blessing of the Lord is with us! The word of God has a CENTRAL place among us. I often wonder why people settle and look for, why ministers preach a watered down, social gospel?
We are not forgetful hearers are we? If not, then we will be blest indeed.
