Our Very Jewish Future!

  1. Isaiah 55-56. Though these latter chapters all seem to be about the coming Millennial Kingdom, there seems to be a lot of Old Testament imagery. Will there be sabbath-keeping, burnt offerings, etc, in the New World?

This has always been my understanding, though I am sure the “spiritualizers” want to claim this for the church and even for our own age somehow. I believe that just as sacrifices in the Old Covenant were nothing more than pictures of the True that would come, these latter day sacrifices will be pictures of that which has already come. The “house of prayer” (evidently the Millennial Temple) mentioned here and by Jesus cements this prophecy to the time of Jesus and forward. Since it has not come to pass yet, we look for it in that Millennial time. I believe that the final Kingdom on earth, under King Jesus, will be oh so Jewish! Jesus will have a people who will finally obey all His commandments. That will make Him happy and when He is happy the Earth is happy.

  1. Isaiah 58:1-12. What does the Lord here teach His people about fasting?

It is possible to go hungry for many meals and many days and still not have fasted properly. Our hunger is not what God is after. Rather, He desires that we sacrifice our plenty to meet someone else’s needs. A person who has many clothes might “fast” in the area of clothing and give away things he simply does not need. A person with a lot of room in his house could easily give up space for one who needs that space. Fasting was intended to open our eyes to God’s agenda, to cause us to realize we are not gods, and that we have the wherewithal to bless others.

  1. Isaiah 60-66. The last seven chapters of Isaiah are generally about what and when?

These are clearly a description of the wonderful world that will be ours when Jesus comes and sets up His Kingdom. They picture a Jerusalem at peace, and a delight to the world. Isaiah sees Israel in favor with God and man. God’s salvation has come to the earth.

There are lessons to be gained, and truths to be applied, for the here and now, but the literal focus of the prophet is a time that has not yet come to planet earth. Every Jew looked forward to this time, including the apostles of our Lord who wondered if “the Kingdom” was not now going to be restored to Israel, as Jesus drifted up with the clouds into Heaven. He never denied such an idea, merely let them know that the timing of it was beyond them at present. Meanwhile they would have to go and find some non-Jewish participants of that Kingdom. Then would come the end.
