Ad Hominem Argument: Also, "Personal attack," "Poisoning the well." The fallacy of attempting to refute an argument by attacking the opposition’s personal character or reputation, using a corrupted negative argument from ethos.E.g., "He's so evil that you can't believe anything he says." "Guilt by Association." 1. Guilt by Association: The fallacy of trying to refute or condemn someone's standpoint, arguments or actions by evoking the negative ethos of those with whom one associates or of a group, religion or race to which he or she belongs or once adhered to. A form of Ad Hominem Argument. (E.g., "Don't listen to her. She's a Republican so you can't trust anything she says.") An extreme instance of this is the "For my enemies, nothing" Fallacy, where perceived "enemies" are alwayswrong and must be conceded nothing, not even the time of day, e.g., "He's a Republican, so even if he said the sky is blue I still wouldn't believe him."? Mark 3:11-12 unclean spirits testify FOR Jesus -/- Matt 22:15-18 evil men testify FOR Jesus -/ Lk 4:23-25 Man w/ unclean spirit testifies FOR Jesus / Js 2: Devils' monotheism adduced -- Testimony to a good man by evil characters does not argue against his goodness. Biblical=to rebuke evil intentions&silence evil ones. |
