This reminds me of the news item about there being more homeschooled children in NC than those attending private schools. What does that say about families--especially the many headed by single mothers? How can they home school their kids or even afford to send them to private schools? I've heard Christian financial adviser Dave Ramsey comment that he moved to rent a house in a 'better (public) school district.' I don't remember if he said his wife was too busy working but homeschooling was never mentioned. I went to public school but think they were in better shape than today's, but a lot of that has to do with technology distracting kids. I do agree with a previous post about parents being the main teachers of their kids, but that happens anyway--even if they are bad parents. I liked to read because I saw my parents reading the newspaper and comment on it. Even teachers say they cannot reverse what the parents are doing at home. |

Note source of story--a Christian magazine, not a liberal one. Reason for story: to instill fear in evangelical Christians who read it (liberals don't), maybe to get them to vote this time (they didn't turn out to vote for the Mormon guy). With so many Republicans, they will have their hands full trying to figure out who. But the big money support is going to Jeb Bush, so it looks like we are in for a repeat of the same old family dynasty politics that we thought we got past in 1776. Somehow I think anything political that is aired in the Christian media world is there for some ulterior purpose, that the Controllers of the Parties (the guys who count the dollars from the Big Contributors) have already settled the scores, and just need to move the voters to accept it as their own idea. If you venture into the secular media, you will find it nearly totally supportive of Democrats and belittling, besmirching any and all Republicans. I hate to sound pessimistic, but it just seems like everything is set in place, long before the elections roll around. |

As is frequently the case, it is more interesting to read the comments added to the story (at the Charisma website) than just to read the story; some said they would never eat at church potlucks, others tell stories about families living in poverty and filth but still bringing (bad) food to the church potluck. My mother used to say, if we found a pebble or stone in the beans, that she had read that we eat a peck of dirt in our lifetimes, so that was just part of it. People who work in grain silos processing wheat say you would never eat any baked goods if you knew what went into the flour. I am not a fan of the modern 'food trucks' but the fact is that our govt regularly closes down regular restaurants due to roaches, etc. I do believe in the vaccination theory, that you develop resistance from small exposures (and by the way, it's good to see another study has proven no connection between MMR vaccine and autism). Another news story was about how people can overcome peanut allergy by being exposed early on in life. And it's an old story that modern construction methods, insulation materials have caused a problem by sealing up homes so that outside air (and all the good/bad stuff in it) does not circulate, and so now we have 'sick building syndrome.' |

I have been noting this for a long time--churches do not teach much of their own doctrine because they do not want to offend anyone who might disagree. You would figure, though, that the kids in churches would know something more than the adults since I assume they will be attending Sunday school where I assume some doctrinal points are taught. I guess I assume wrong on both counts! As to parents teaching their own children, that went out years ago with the horse and buggy. Youth today are more impacted by social media sources, changing from Facebook to Instagram to who knows what next month. Rush L. talks about 'low information' voters. That's what we have; people getting their news from comedy shows. Newspapers are dying out, only people over 55 read them, and are mostly an arm of the mainstream left anyway. Few watch TV news, and much of it is plain out wrong, like yesterday's local TV news report on Mexico's "Coma" (supposed to be Colima) volcano erupting. They say it's too depressing to read the news--very true, how many people were being killed in massacres and plane crashes around the world this week-hundreds! |
