This reminds me of the news item about there being more homeschooled children in NC than those attending private schools.

What does that say about families--especially the many headed by single mothers? How can they home school their kids or even afford to send them to private schools?

I've heard Christian financial adviser Dave Ramsey comment that he moved to rent a house in a 'better (public) school district.'

I don't remember if he said his wife was too busy working but homeschooling was never mentioned.

I went to public school but think they were in better shape than today's, but a lot of that has to do with technology distracting kids.

I do agree with a previous post about parents being the main teachers of their kids, but that happens anyway--even if they are bad parents. I liked to read because I saw my parents reading the newspaper and comment on it. Even teachers say they cannot reverse what the parents are doing at home.

Florida theme parks have the same heat and humidity during the middle of the summer.
But Chinese are just getting the hang of attracting tourists, which includes the stunt of having pigs jump off a bridge and swim in a lake.
What many in the US assume is "common sense" is not so common in the rest of the world--that helps explain why the world's tallest building in Dubai is not connected to a sewer system, since none exist in that area. Trucks come every day to take away the sewage.

I did hear this story on a talk show last night and today I am wondering if this is another ploy to promote the sale of firearms and ammo.

Note source of story--a Christian magazine, not a liberal one. Reason for story: to instill fear in evangelical Christians who read it (liberals don't), maybe to get them to vote this time (they didn't turn out to vote for the Mormon guy).
With so many Republicans, they will have their hands full trying to figure out who. But the big money support is going to Jeb Bush, so it looks like we are in for a repeat of the same old family dynasty politics that we thought we got past in 1776.
Somehow I think anything political that is aired in the Christian media world is there for some ulterior purpose, that the Controllers of the Parties (the guys who count the dollars from the Big Contributors) have already settled the scores, and just need to move the voters to accept it as their own idea.
If you venture into the secular media, you will find it nearly totally supportive of Democrats and belittling, besmirching any and all Republicans.
I hate to sound pessimistic, but it just seems like everything is set in place, long before the elections roll around.

A sad story but needed to remind people of the history. What is ironic is that, while I would guess 99 percent of Jews in the US believe in the Holocaust, a good one-third or more do not believe in God! I have spoken with a few who say they CANNOT believe in God BECAUSE of the Holocaust.

OK, so if he is responsible, can he now be impeached?
Or is this another case like former Attorney General Janet Reno taking 'full responsibility' for the futile deaths at the govt attack at Waco, Texas?
In other words, George Orwell, thank you, we have now arrived at 'double speak' where words have lost their meaning.

Compare this with this story:
a bicyclist got killed by a car in the early morning hours, the driver left him on the road. It took the police a month to finally track him down. They have now charged him with being responsible for the man's death.
What do you think will happen to him?

As is frequently the case, it is more interesting to read the comments added to the story (at the Charisma website) than just to read the story; some said they would never eat at church potlucks, others tell stories about families living in poverty and filth but still bringing (bad) food to the church potluck.
My mother used to say, if we found a pebble or stone in the beans, that she had read that we eat a peck of dirt in our lifetimes, so that was just part of it.
People who work in grain silos processing wheat say you would never eat any baked goods if you knew what went into the flour.
I am not a fan of the modern 'food trucks' but the fact is that our govt regularly closes down regular restaurants due to roaches, etc.
I do believe in the vaccination theory, that you develop resistance from small exposures (and by the way, it's good to see another study has proven no connection between MMR vaccine and autism).
Another news story was about how people can overcome peanut allergy by being exposed early on in life.
And it's an old story that modern construction methods, insulation materials have caused a problem by sealing up homes so that outside air (and all the good/bad stuff in it) does not circulate, and so now we have 'sick building syndrome.'

I have been noting this for a long time--churches do not teach much of their own doctrine because they do not want to offend anyone who might disagree.

You would figure, though, that the kids in churches would know something more than the adults since I assume they will be attending Sunday school where I assume some doctrinal points are taught.

I guess I assume wrong on both counts!

As to parents teaching their own children, that went out years ago with the horse and buggy.

Youth today are more impacted by social media sources, changing from Facebook to Instagram to who knows what next month.

Rush L. talks about 'low information' voters. That's what we have; people getting their news from comedy shows. Newspapers are dying out, only people over 55 read them, and are mostly an arm of the mainstream left anyway.

Few watch TV news, and much of it is plain out wrong, like yesterday's local TV news report on Mexico's "Coma" (supposed to be Colima) volcano erupting.

They say it's too depressing to read the news--very true, how many people were being killed in massacres and plane crashes around the world this week-hundreds!

The USA Today article seems to contain words directly taken from a similar article from Christianity Today website found when you do a web search for 'history of Sunday school' except the USA Today author changed it to say the initial reason was to control the kids who had to work 6 days a week (the CT author said it was to teach basic literacy, using the Bible as textbook).
Neil Postman wrote (in his book, Building a Bridge to the 18th Century) that the idea of childhood is an 18th Century development, that before this, children were 'little adults' and thus required to work. Childhood did not exist, nor such things as public schools.

Today churches promote small group meetings in homes during the week, more than Sunday school classes. I've heard of a large church in this area that had all the adult Sunday school classes meet 'off campus' so they could use the space for childrens classes.

One sad note in the USA Today story is the lack of music education; when the kids only wanted to dance to the music and not sing along.
And of course missing was a comparison with other religions, especially the growth of Muslim schools.

After reading another news headline here at SA about Google using balloons for their service, I thought maybe it would be more economical for Dollar to do the same.
And I remember another news item was about another TV preacher who was killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas.
I think these prosperity preachers are a typical American occurrence. Yes, there is a Sun Myung Moon from South Korea, but I think he learned it from American sources.
Self-help books make up a very large segment of a bookstore in America, and our newspapers are also filled with 'news you can use' on health, finance, etc.
Even Christian bookstores have sections dedicated to self-help. Learning the fine points of Arianism vs Calvinism does not hold a candle to a book on 10 steps to financial freedom or 40 days to a better marriage.

It is interesting that this collection is in the USA, not good ol' England. It makes you wonder--why is that? Why didn't England keep it in one of those grand universities like Cambridge? The obvious answer is that no such institution wanted it, or wanted to bid $$ on acquiring it.
Going a bit further, it makes you wonder what happened to that church that Spurgeon pastored? Shouldn't it be the 'mother church' of a great denomination today?

It is interesting to note that the data is for all kinds of religious groups, including Muslims, Jews, Mormons, etc. In the original WSJ article there is a link to another website that keeps track of the numbers of people (in the USA) in each group; very interesting to see for example that there are more Greek Orthodox than PCA-Presbyterians, and nearly a million Buddhists.
So the movement away from attending bldgs is across the board, not just a Christian tendency.

It is good that she plans to donate a portion of it, and it may bring up some opportunities for Christians to ask non-believers around them, is that what you would do? do you think tithing is good?
On the other hand, it can be negative when people see her working at 'humble' jobs and see justification for themselves doing the same thing.
As the saying goes, "the lottery is a tax on people who can't do math."
More interesting will be the news that may not be reported: what happens to all these lottery winners after they won? I have seen a few stories that show they do not end up well. Many go bankrupt, get divorced, and are estranged from family, etc.
All in all, just another piece of the flotsam and jetsam that washes up on the beach.

There were no exceptions in Florida when citrus greening came along; govt inspectors entered every yard, every farm and destroyed all citrus trees, including those which were healthy.
Out went the idea, "This is my land and I am free to do with it whatever I want." Of course, if you wanted to open a barbershop or nail salon in your garage, the local zoning officials would also have something to say about that.
So, we are used to dealing with govt regulations over our life; vaccinations should not be any different.
What has confused the matter was the Lancet (medical journal) article that was later retracted and the author had to give up his medical license because they found out he was receiving $$$ from the law firm that was suing.
Much of the same keeps things going today; law firms paying for phony evidence.
