The issue of having weak and strong Christians in the same congregation is common to all congregations. In Corinth the strong believed that the solution to all their problems would be achieved through knowledge. Paul cautioned that their knowledge was defective because it lacked love. The love Paul was talking about was a character trait of seeking the welfare of others by denying oneself. Knowledge is good and necessary, but only when it is seen and used as a tool for making you a more effective and selfless servant of others. If the strong had understood this, they would have denied themselves in order to protect the consciences of the weak. This is because, according to Paul, it is dangerous to violate your conscience even when it is bound by a standard that doesn't fully understand God's truth. The conscience needs to be instructed by God's eternal word, but even as a person grows in their understanding of the truth, they must protect their conscience by not violating the standard they believe to be right.
