"There was a man sent from God, whose name was John..." So begins the story of the gospel ministry. John is presented as the last of the prophets, and the first of the gospel ministers. Preaching a message of repentance, and of faith, in view of the coming and present person of the Saviour, the Word of God.
John openly declared that he was not the one that should come, but the prophesied forerunner of Isaiah 40:3. Jesus later declared, "For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come."
John's ministry and example teach us much about the gospel, the ministry, and the importance of placing Christ and His Truth first in our lives. |
