In this passage at the beginning of Malachi we are confronted afresh with the reality of God's sovereign election of his people: Jacob's election and Esau's rejection. Paul does a similar thing in Romans 9:6-18. We are saved not by our works, but as a result of sovereign election extended to his people by the grace of God in Christ. As God's undeserving people we rest and rejoice in this great mercy.
