The parable of the unclean spirit is both a pronouncement of judgment and warning. The unclean spirit is no other than Satan himself who desires to go after the people of God. This story is a pronouncement of judgment in that those who lack the convicting power of the Holy Spirit, as the parable calls them empty houses, are unprotected and so the Enemy takes full possession of them never to relinquish his hold on them. This is the very definition of who the Scripture calls an apostate. This story is a pronouncement of warning for Christians to, as the writer of Hebrews says, to examine themselves lest they find themselves having an unbelieving heart. This warning should lead true believers to a place of repentance and trust.
