Exploring the shepherding of a doomed flock and the rejection of the shepherd in Zechariah 11:4-14.
1. The Faithful Shepherding of the Doomed Flock (Zechariah 11:4-7)
Zechariah commanded to act as the shepherd of a flock destined for destruction, representing the people of Israel under judgment.
o The buyers slaughter the flock and go unpunished. o The sellers hypocritically bless God for their gain. o The shepherds (leaders) have no pity on the flock.
Zechariah takes two staffs:
o Favor (representing God's grace) o Union (representing the unity of Israel)
Zechariah acts as a faithful shepherd despite knowing the flock is doomed.
2. The Rejection of the Shepherd (Zechariah 11:8-14)
Zechariah becomes impatient with corrupt leaders (symbolized by three shepherds) and removes them.
The people detest Zechariah, and he rejects his role as their shepherd, breaking the staff Favor to symbolize the end of God's protection.
When Zechariah asks for his wages, the people give him 30 pieces of silver—the price of a dead or injured slave.
Prophetic Act: Zechariah throws the 30 pieces of silver to the potter in the house of the Lord, foreshadowing Judas' betrayal of Jesus.
Zechariah breaks the staff Union, symbolizing the division between Judah and Israel.
