Today's sermon will focus on v. 17. From this, we will begin to understand what God is doing in our lives. What is taught in this passage or in particular this verse is one of the purposes God has for us. If we understand this, then it'll help us to respond better to what God is doing . Why was this permitted? Why was this "given" to him? Well, in the original as well as the ESV translation, the phrase "to keep me from being conceited" is used twice in this one verse. The exact same phrase is used twice in the verse. It is a purpose clause, in order that he would not become conceited. I. God is more concerned about your holiness than your health; in your humility than your happiness! II. God's afflictions are always purposeful and perfectly prescribed. III. God can use any means He sees fit because of His wisdom and goodness as well as His love for us. IV. God desires that we submit to Him and please Him in our broken condition (vv. 9. 10).
