Theme: In the midst of His own impending death, Jesus shows great compassion and exhortation to others. In v. 26, Simon carries Jesus's cross. This is a picture of true discipleship, and we need to discern if we are truly following Christ. True discipleship denies oneself and follows Jesus - not the culture, not the world, but Jesus. In vv. 27-31, Jesus has compassion on the weeping women. We need to emulate Jesus's selflessness. We also need to reflect on people's most important problem. Jesus knew the people's most important problem was their idolatry, their rejection of God. The absolute greatest need is for people to know the true and living God and to turn from their sins and believe on Christ. It is wise to prepare for the future, not only our future here on earth but most importantly, the future of eternal life. Let us look to Christ as the Author and finisher of our faith. Let us deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Him. Let us have our priorities straight and take the warning Christ selflessly gave these women and all Israel. We need to be prepared for the judgment of God.
