One of the features of Peter's letter is his repeated use of Old Testament verses to speak of Christ and His church. 1:10-12 is intended to give encouragement to beleaguered Christians, but it also sets forth Peter's view of the Old Testament; so it is doubly instructive to us.
1. God has bestowed on us priveleges longed for by the OT prophets and saints and even by angels. 2. What OT prophets wrote was directed by the Holy Spirit. 3. They could not fully or clearly comprehend their own prophecies, but God did make clear to them that they were serving not their own generation but the people who would see the fulfillment of their words. 4. It was through the Holy Spirit as the spirit of Christ who spoke through them of the future (to them) sufferings and glories of Christ.
