After two decades of being cheated by Laban, and after trying in his own strength to outwit his crafty uncle, Jacob responds to God’s command to return to the land of his fathers. After dealing with Laban that might sound like a no-brainer, but things are going quite well for Jacob. Here we see how God reveals himself to Jacob, and the way in which he responds in obedience. For the first time in a long time his wives agree on something: “whatever God has said to you, do.” And in an event that foreshadows the later exodus from Egypt, Jacob escapes. And in his doing so we see the work of Christ who delivers his people from servitude and brings them to the land of rest.
