In the two Scripture readings in our evening service (Isaiah 2:10-3:15 and John 1:19-34), we heard picturesque descriptions of the leaders of the visible church in different eras, picturesque but very unflattering. These leaders were noted to be deceiving the people, using them for their own gain and opposing the actual works of God in their midst. Rather than pointing the people to God, these puffed up men sought to glorify themselves. These leaders visited John the evangelist at the height of his ministry, demanding to know who he claimed to be. In contrast to that of these drama queens of leaders, John's ministry was characterized by humility, service and giving glory and due to the One who is greater than him. As a good example for those involved in ANY type of Christian ministry, John demonstrates how to conduct any God-given ministry: Precede Christ, point to Christ, let Christ do His work and fade out of the way. It's not about us.
