If your children came to the dinner table and sat down with dirt and grease covering their hands, with soiled shirts, and with a rancid smell like that of a locker room, I dare say that as parents you would send them to the bathroom to clean themselves and to prepare themselves to sit down with you for the evening meal. Now if you would do so when eating an ordinary meal, how much more your Heavenly Father calls you to be spiritually cleansed and prepared as you sit around the table to eat of the Lord’s Supper. God’s children are graciously invited to commune with the Lord Jesus Christ at this holy meal, but the Lord has ordained that there be the appropriate preparation before doing so—an appropriate preparation which He has authorized in His holy Word.
Next Lord’s Day, it is our great privilege to receive the blessed supper of the Lord, and today we shall focus our attention upon our preparation to come to that meal. From our text in 1 Corinthians 11:27-28 we shall consider the following questions: (1) What Is It to Eat and Drink Unworthily (1 Corinthians 11:27)? (2) What Is It to Be Guilty of the Body and Blood of the Lord (1 Corinthians 11:27)? (3) What Is It to Examine Yourself (1 Corinthians 11:28)?
