Jacob has made progress of his knowledge of God. However, he is still attempting to arrange circumstances as he meets his brother Esau. He was afraid. However, in the night God wrestles with him. In the end God breaks him physically so that he can only cling. This event cause Jacob to more like God wanted him to be. He was changed and his new name reminded him of God's changing of him. God in his grace broke Jacob to make him what he ought to be.
