In the first nine verses of the Gospel of John, we read of deep and glorious mysteries. These are truths which are inaccessible to our natural understanding, philosophical contemplation, and rational inquiry. Yet, the truth is revealed to mankind by the means of inspired revelation. In the text before us, the Apostle John reveals another great mystery by inspired revelation: the mystery of Divine Adoption. The adoption of the justified sinner shows us that our redemption is not a cold and bare cosmic transaction. It is not merely the forgiveness of sins (as glorious as that is) and then subsequently being abandoned by God or being a mere servant of a Great King. Rather, it is the revelation that the justified sinner is brought into a close and tender relationship with his Creator through the blood of Christ. This close and tender relationship is called adoption. God's adoption of justified sinners is an act of pure and unalloyed grace. It is grace because God is not compelled to adopt you and me. It is grace manifested to the world. – Pastor Schlegel
