When God gave the ten commandments, the context was interesting, to say the least. The people were to be consecrated. They were not to touch the mountain, upon pain of death. When God came down, the mountain was a blaze of fire and smoke, the earths shook, there was a loud trumpet sound, there was lightning and thunder and God spoke in a thunderous voice. Needless to say, the people, including Moses, were terrified. The commandments were not given to make the people feel good. They were a revelation of God's holiness and righteousness. Contrary to popular belief, God does not have a relaxed view of obedience. In the first commandment, God reminded Israel that He was their God and that He had redeenmed them from slavery, and then He commanded them to have no other gods. In this sermon, we deal with many of the examples of idols and false gods common to the human race. After exposing human sin and unfaithfulness to God, we consider the greatness of what Christ has done on the cross by bearing that sin.
