In the beginning of chapter 4, the writer of Hebrews both admonishes and this Hebrew church. He first admonishes them to fear God while the promise of God's salvation still stands. That is to repent and leave behind the idolatrous nature that doomed the first generation of Israel coming out of Egypt. But then he warns them if they don't turn away they run the risk of failing to reach God's final rest in the age to come. They must not follow in the ways of the majority party of the stiff-necked children of Israel who refused to believe the good news of God's salvation, but rather arrogantly presumed on God's mercy to save them whether they acted faithfully or not. Instead they must follow the example of those like Caleb and Joshua who took hold of God's promise. But we know that Caleb and Joshua were only able to believe because God had gifted them their faith to begin with.
