Mt. Horeb / Sinai, The Mount That Speaks_03 SERIES: MOUNTAINS OF THE BIBLE Ex. 3:1-7; 17:1-15; 32:1-9 means desert or desolation. Mt. Horeb and Mt. Sinai are either the same mountain or within the same mountain range. They were called "the mountain of God." where God called Moses to deliver His people from slavery. where God gave the law to Moses and His people. where Moses struck the rock and God caused water to flow out from the rock. where the people repented and gave offerings to God. where Elijah fled from Jezebel.1.The Burning Bush. The Mount that Speaks tells us that Moses was hidden on the back side of the desert by God. But now, forty years later, a significant event occurs: God calls Moses, calls him to a heroic task.2. Water from the Rock (The War between the flesh and the Holy Spirit). The craving for water, the need to moisten parched lips, is one of the strongest drives that a man has. The Rock was a type of Christ and being smitten by the rod was typified by the cross. The Water coming out of the rock. However, the Holy Spirit was not available until the Rock (Christ) was smitten (crucified). The reception of the Holy Spirit coming from the Rock caused a war from within from the flesh and the spirit.3. The Tables of Testimony Broken. The Moses descended from on High with the Law. Confronted with man's sin, he broke both tablets then returned with a depressing demeanor on his lips to seek an uncertain forgiveness. He failed! Christ descended from on High, fulfilled the Law, and having, on behalf of sinners, suffered its full penalty, returned to Heaven having shed His Precious Blood, the sign of His Accomplished Atonement, to obtain forgiveness.
