In this passage, we see the link between religion and business. False religions have always been associated with significant money. In this passage, the silversmiths rise up because Paul's preaching about the inability of idols made with hands to do anything is hurting their business. They are able to stir up the people by speaking about how they the Christians are blaspheming their god and destroying the glory of Ephesus. We have seen persecution come before in Acts, typically because of envy. Here we see that envy is undergirded by greed. When persecution comes, it is usually because people are using religion for their own ends than to serve the true and living God. When they can no longer get what they want from religion, they want to get the Christians out of the way. Christians have a duty to be a people of the Way and doing so will effect the people around them, just like it did in Ephesus.
