Introduction Peter was a man with a profound insight into the meaning and purpose of the cross of Christ (Acts 2:23, 3:18, 1Peter 2:24, 3:18). But clearly it wasn't always so.
Why did Peter say what he did? (a) Ignorance of the Scriptures Peter loved Jesus greatly, and he had great zeal. But he had Biblical ignorance (Luke 24:25-27).
(b) Influence of Satan Satan repeatedly tempts to Lord to save himself from the cross (Luke 4:8, Luke 23:35, 37, 39).
Application This passage for us is like the mist on a damp morning that reveals all the spiders' traps. How does the devil approach our savior? Although he's clearly present, he remains out of sight. And instead of attacking Jesus directly, he chooses to use one of Jesus' devoted disciples and friends as his instrument. And therefore we must be on our guard against two things:
(a) Giving the devil the opportunity to use us in this way. We may have plenty of love and zeal, but become tools of the devil because of our Biblical ignorance.
(b) Giving the devil the opportunity to mislead us in this way. Our defense against this is the same, knowledge of the will of God in the Scriptures. We need to be able to say with Jesus, in the hour of temptation, "It is written!"
