One of the glorious truths the Savior declared to Mary Magdalene when she caught sight of Him on Resurrection Sunday was this: that He would shortly ascend unto His God.
The Jews claimed that this statement by the Lord Jesus proves He is not deity, since His God is the God of Israel.
But the man Christ Jesus certainly owned God as His God. His body was made by God, for He said, "a body Thou hast prepared for me." That body, prepared by God for His Son, was for sacrifice as our Substitute at Calvary!
Not only so, but Jesus submitted Himself to all the commandments of God which were ordained to govern mankind. Jesus obeyed God's commands perfectly.
The incarnate Jesus submitted Himself to the judgment and wrath of God, not for His own faults, but for ours.
Jesus was saved from death by God, as Jesus Himself acknowledged when He said, Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell nor suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
The incarnate Lord Jesus trusted in God, that He would deliver Him, and God did deliver Him from the grave in victory!
The Lord Jesus glorified God, and in all these things showed that, in His humanity, God was His God.
In Psalm 45, it is said of the Lord Jesus that He is both God, and that God annoints Him with the oil of Gladness above His fellows. The writer of Hebrews confirms this was written of the Savior.
But most importantly, the Lord Jesus acknowledged His God when He cried out in agony on the Cross, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?"
The Savior suffered under the judgment of His God for our guiltiness. But He ascends to His God because the debt is discharged and all the sin He bore is expunged by His blood!
