In our contemporary times, and especially now, questions of loyalty and political support are common subjects of conversation. These conversations occur at home, at places of work, and even in the church. Passions can be heightened and sometimes relationships are strained. But it is on days such as these that all of us are called to remember where our true and ultimate loyalties lie and to be unified in peace. The call to remember is bound up in the sacrament in which we will participate today. When we remember the sacrifice of the Savior, it is not merely a fond and hazy recollection of a tragic death, but a calling to mind of what our redemption cost and to whom we belong. The apostles of the Lord were confronted with competing claims of loyalty and responded with the famous words, “…we ought to obey God rather than men.” They knew where their loyalties were and were unified in their stand for the King and His covenant. Let us follow their godly example today and every day. – Pastor Schlegel
