Thesis: The pursuit of happiness is inate to all human beings. Most look to satisfy this quest with the follies of this world.
Christ himself says that true happiness resides with a deep desire for righteousness. Christ himself says that the believer has a hunger and thirst for righteousness - using the two most basic needs of human existence to qualify it's desire.
1. WHAT IS RIGHTEOUSNESS? * Character/quality of being just or right * opposite of being morally bankrupt * standing before God without any imperfection * desire of believer to imitate Christ * regularly practiced by believer * Promise of the gospel (Ezekiel 36:27) * a work for God's glory (Romans 6:13,18) * A desired and learned pursuit (1 Timothy 6:11 , 2 Timothy 3:16)
2. WHAT IS THIRSTING AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS? * Psalm 119 ! * Delight, meditate, feast upon, memorize, consume, declare, love, follow God's commands. * Deep desire to do right before God * Deep desire to please God * Long to look more like Christ
3. THE RESULT OF RIGHTEOUS THIRSTING * "Satisfied" or "filled" = truly seek it, you will get it * Fully answered request, because this is God's will
CONCLUSION: Hungering and thirsting after happiness will be temporary at best, and regularly unattainable in this world. If you hunger after righteousness, you will be happy.
