The doctrine of justification has been the great burden of the Apostle Paul through the first four chapters of the Book of Romans. In a systematic way, as guided by the Holy Spirit, he has dismantled every superstructure of human devising which has been erected to grant merit to human action or human claims of deserving divine grace. But as we come to chapter 5, the inspired apostle begins to unfold the glorious significance of sovereign and gracious justification – being reckoned righteous before the Holy God of Heaven and Earth. Our first lesson ought to be that the doctrine of justification is not a dusty and abstract doctrine which has no application to life. On the contrary, as the apostle shows by that key word therefore, it is a doctrine which has an application and as he explains, it touches everything in life and everything past, present, and future. One cannot overstate the importance of the prerequisite: having a biblical and orthodox understanding of the doctrine. Precision in doctrine is necessary for proper application of that doctrine. – Pastor Schlegel
