Aim: To marvel at God and His salvation of Christ's church.
Doctrine: God pares-down His army in order to enhance His glory (in our eyes). The Lord does not need anyone or anything, and yet He exalts His church (in allowing us to serve Him).
Exegesis: How God's wondrous plans seem so strange to us sinners: we are prone to ask, ''Are not bigger numbers better than smaller ones (vv. 1-3)? Why would drinking style determine battle-fitness (vv. 2-6)? What good are trumpets in a fight (vv. 7-8)?''
Further application: Why the church is wise not to assume too much with regard to life in this world: because God's ways are infinitely higher and greater than ours are; the greatest example of this being the cross of Christ.
Key verse: v. 2 ''And the LORD said to Gideon, 'The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying, ''My own hand has saved me.'''''
