A Psalm of Confident Prayer & Lamentation. In a worshipful manner David sets all of his affections on the Lord. David is hopeful and trusting, but he is immediately reminded of his enemies. Let them be put to shame because of their treacherous actions. He needs God to show him his precepts and promises and to be upheld by the Lord. He is confident that the Lord will deliver him. He wants God to show him His lovingkindness. But this Psalm points us on to our Lord Jesus who was devoted to prayer at all times. He was devoted to earnest prayer. Jesus was taught by the Spirit and walked with the Lord in His paths perfectly. He learned how all of God's promises would be fulfilled in Him. He was the Seed in whom all the earth would be blessed. And it was to the faithfulness of His Father's promise that He looked. David is here confessing his particular sins. But how can this apply to the Lord Jesus Christ in whom was no sin? Jesus never asked for forgiveness because He didn't need to ask for forgiveness. How do we understand verse 7 then? But the very voice of Christ is speaking on behalf of His body, the church, which He was so willing to lay down His life for Bride the Church.
