Mark presents a picture of what a nation that doesn't submit to Christ looks and the fact that our hope does not rest in our nation but in Christ. A nation that does not submit to Christ is 1) in opposition to Christ, 2) unable to thwart Christ and 3) run by people, people making sinful decisions, people who need the gospel. Mark uses this "trial" to bring comfort and teaching to the saints who are themselves about to be falsely accused and persecuted. Christ provides not only an example to them of how to suffer, but the reality that He is the hope in suffering if God doesn't "crush" His Son, He in His justice must crush us because sin MUST be paid for. God provided a substitute - His Son.
