In the previous section of Malachi, the Lord challenged the worship of His people because they had become lax in their worship, despised the divinely ordained system of worship, and the worship of their God had become a weariness to them. But the problem was not confined to the "religious" life of His people. The rejection of God's precepts extended to everything. This pattern is not confined to God's people in the days of Malachi. Whenever the religious affections of God's people begin to grow cold and indifferent, the ethical and moral life quickly follows. What was once considered profane and evil is no longer regarded as such. This is as much a danger today as it was then, and the promised effect is the same now as then. In verse 12, the Lord declares that the one who does this will not be received and will be cut off. Therefore, take heed to your spirit.
