And now the writer of Hebrews "re-starts" in a sense, calling his readers to "fix their thoughts on Jesus". Not upon angels. We have heard that. Not upon Moses either (that is coming). There are so many things, people, objects, beings, that you might think upon; that may capture your attention. But, if you will have any confidence, any hope . . . if your confidence and hope will be sure, not shaky, not questionable, but a sure, unshakable, confidence and hope . . . until the end, then it must be in this Christ, on this Jesus. You must consider this One, and no other. You must fix your thoughts upon Him.
There it is . . . the center and end of this passage. The only question remains is, Who is this One? Upon whom is the writer calling you, the reader, to fix your thoughts, your mind, to consider? Well you say Jesus of course. Yes. But who is He? Well, this letter has been in the midst of describing Jesus, the Son, the Lord, our high priest. So the question might be more appropriately phrased: “What is it about Jesus that the writer urges the reader to consider?” Or as we get further into the text, What is it about Jesus that one is called to “hold fast” to? |
