Aim: To be victorious over temptation—as Christ's trial-tested church.
Doctrine: The Christian's struggle with temptation is a matter of life and death. Confirmed life is bestowed on those who overcome it; bitter death is tasted by those who succumb to it.
Exegesis: The nature of temptation—as it touches on the church: God uses temptation to prove the authenticity of our faith (v. 12); God allows the flesh and the devil to afflict us—for our ultimate good (v. 13); God shows us that our fallen hearts are our biggest problems (vv. 14-15).
Further application: How believers are able to conquer temptation: the principle of greater love must (and will) prevail in the true saint, even through the mighty conflict wherein the allurement is finally overthrown.
Key verse: v. 12 ''Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.''
